CALABaSH/Gourd

"Throughout the ages in America, Africa and Asia, and still today, this non-edible, hard-shelled fruit is used as eating vessels, food and water storage, for religious rituals and for medicinal purposes. It is also used for the making of musical instruments.

I first considered the artistic possibilities of gourd/calabash while working on an installation inspired by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The unique organic quality of this new 3D canvas allowed me to create something that added an entirely new dimension to my fine art."
